the quest : freaks imaginative quests to save damsels in distress and slaydragons
the task : max has a task, it is fill up the journal frek gave him with all of their adventures
the loss of innocence: max is definetly a maturing story, from being a clueless "kicker" with no freinds to being rather intellegent lad with a friend who faceds his fear (his father)
the hero : the hero in this particular tale would have to be max. max saved loretta, only to be captured by his father, then be rescued by freak. max is also the hero because he is the one who carries freak on his shoulders, protecting him
the mentor : definatly freak. freak is always guiding max: with his vocabulary and his life
the shadow: to me there are two shadows (1) maxs' dad and (2) freaks approaching death
